All the Sounds of the Forest... in One Bird!

In the forests of Australia lives a bird that stands out from all the others because... it sings like all the others combined, and more! The Lyrebird, or Menura, is one of the largest migratory birds. Its face resembles that of a blackbird, while its colorful and ornate tail is reminiscent of a peacock.

However, its most unique feature is its ability to mimic sounds it hears in the forest. In its effort to attract females, it imitates the calls of more than 20 different bird species, often confusing the birds themselves. Even more impressive is its reproduction of human-made sounds in the forest. Camera shutters, car alarms, chainsaws, or the whistles of passersby—nothing escapes its mimicry.
